Still Can't Forget-

I moved away from the city

to move away from the memories

but these blue skies and tree lines

just remind me of you

I drove and drove all night

until the moonlight filled my shoes

I slept a wink on the side of the road

until the sunshine came through

you said I was the best thing

that ever happened to you

time went by and then you cut me loose

you said that things would never change

knowing that they always do

and after a thousand miles I still can't forget

all those drunken smiles smoking cigarettes

remember when we drove all night? we were running away

watched movies black and white, wishing for different days.

I think i went so far just to feel the distanc

now my broken heart is in my broke down car

I got tears no one can witness

I'm stranded in Kansas

nobody ever plans this

i'm lost amongst the plains

I wish i would have stayed and changed

you said I was the best thing

that ever happened to you

then time went by and then you cut me loose.

you said that things would never change

knowing they always do.

After a thousand miles I still can't forget

all those drunken smiles, smoking cigarettes

remember when we drove all night? we were running away

watched movies black and white, wishing for different days.

Understand--

I'm a young kid walking down the road

13 years of doing what I'm told

momma's poor and daddy left years ago

as I walk I'm skipping stones

on the pavement, its my only entertainment

the only question is how this life will go.

My parents always told me

when i was older I'd understand

I hope when I'm older, that I will understand

nothin really ever goes as planned

but you always got to do the best ya can.

I'm an old man walking down the street

with a suitcase, full of memories

the only thing that ever brought me to my knees

was losing her last summer, to that damn disease.

as I walk I'm smoking a cigar

thinking on these things digging at my heart

will I ever fall apart? will I ever get out of the dark?

my parents always told

when I was older I'd understand

now that I'm older I still don't understand

but you always gotta do the best ya can

and somehow it makes ya a better man.

Golden Fence--

Its been so long

I hope I see ya soon

You always said I might as well be living on the moon

if that were the case id just trace my steps back to you

I love you more than a judge loves the truth

Its been so long

It feels like I'm lost

You always said I might as well be gone

if that were a thing id just think of your blinking eyes

I love you more than a bird loves the skies

And if we could meet, once again

in a field with a golden fence

I would make believe and you would pretend

our kisses are the oceans and our love is the sand.

Ive tried so hard just to let you go

you always said that ive never even known

if that were a thing id think of you all this time

I love you more than an outlaw loves his crimes

Ive tried so hard to get you out my dreams

you always said that you'd haunt them more than you mean

if that were a case id sleep all my life

I love you more than a rich man loves a price

And if we could meet, once again

in a field with a golden fence

I would make believe and you would pretend

our kisses are the mountains and our love is the wind.

Blue Birds

I'm going out for a drink

but this time it might be my last

washing memories down the sink

pouring my thoughts in a glass

I know Ive done my part

sixty years of workin to the bone

still, no one has my heart

I don't think it'll ever find a home

I wouldn't mind it if the sky fell down

no I wouldn't mind it if the sky was on the ground

in that moment we would all be the same

we're all blue birds on fire hoping for the rain.

I'm going out for smoke

just so I can catch my breath

theres clouds in the air full of hope

from the fire burnin in my chest

I know Ive done my part

sixty years of chasing at my dreams

still no one has my heart

and I'm running out of gasoline

no i wouldn't mind it if the sky fell down

no i wouldn't mind it if the sky was on the ground

cus in that moment, we would all be the same

we're all Blue Birds on fire, hoping for the rain

Kitchen Light----

I came home, one rainy night

I saw my father, in the kitchen light

he said, I can't do this anymore

with tears in his eyes, he walks out the door

last thing I remember, was seeing red

but then again I wasn't really in a clear mindset

I stumbled upstairs and went to bed

True love is out there

its loving someone with no regrets

True love is out there

its loving someone till death

True Love is out there

but I haven't seen any yet

I woke up, started to drink

saw my mother, at the kitchen sink

and i asked her, what happened here?

hes been loving someone else the past three years

last thing I remember, was seeing red

but then again I wasn't really in a clear mindset

I stumbled upstairs and went to bed

True love is out there

its loving someone with no regrets

True love is out there

its loving someone till death

True Love is out there

but I haven't seen any yet

She------

She left home when she was just a kid

almost old enough to buy cigarettes

even though she's never smoked one

and probably never will

Took her roots from the garden state

traveled off to some unknown place

she's breathing in her life begins in michigan

met a man at a bible school

after workin for a year or two

they fell in love, sent from above

head over heels

married up and happy for a while

they started talking about having a child

years went by, aged like wine

ended up with nine

each grew up to have their own lives

she never wonders if she did things right

her heart of gold never gets old

she's always kind

She looks back at her life and smiles

watching all her kids run wild

her love for them runs miles

she'll keep running, she'll keep running

for a while.

Made to be Alone

Ive got a broken heart disease

that echoes, it echoes through my teeth

Ive done a love hating crime

been hanging hearts out on the line

Im paranoid of love, peaking through the blinds

she's more than enough, but i want more all the time

Maybe I was made to be alone

just so I can show other how it feels

hopefully some of you will know

broken hearts make broken deals

Ive got a winded, tired past

from running, running with the pack

since then ive wandered, wandered on my own

in search of a girl and a home

Im terrified of love, I can feel it in my bones

shes more than enough, shes out there in the cold

Maybe I was made to be alone

Just so I can show other how it feels

hopefully, some of you will know

broken hearts make broken deals.

The Wind

I used to climb out my window

and meet a girl with a sundress for a cigarette

she used to sneak out real slow

shed take some money to make things funny and to pay her rent

she moved to Kentucky

but her eyes still burn bright in my mind

she was always so lovely, but my damn heart never gave her time

its a broken clock ive never leaned to wind

The wind is against me

but no trees are swaying

the wind is against me

but no leaves are rustling

She called me up the other day

saying shes a rebel in some hotel

I could barely hear what she had to see

with an ice pack on her mouth so her lip wouldn't swell

saying all these guys can go to hell

she doesn't call me anymore

and sometimes i wonder if she's breathing right

she spends her nights on the floor

help up by some liquer and a piece of twine

saying she'll never meet another so fine

The wind is against me

but no tress are swaying

the wind is against me

but no leaves are rustling,

The Old Days

at seventeen he never hurt anyone

but he lost his self esteem

the only way he could love anyone is by drinking a bottle of jim beam

he saw that he was having fun

and he fell in love when he was twenty one

at twenty three he crashed his mothers car

stole her keys when she was asleep

told his friends I can drive you home

even after havin all these drinks

he thought it was alll a dream, he might as well been eighteen

yeah those were the old days

there are some things in life that time can't replace

he wants to go back to those things

but he doesn't look back cus he's not going that way

since then hes sobered up

hes got two years underneath his belt

the only thing is that he's lonely now and he's thinking she can help

but the only love he's had before

is from drinking on a pint or more

he spends his nights in his room alone

writing songs about love and heartbreak

sometimes if you walk on by

you can hear his pain make the house shake

he thinks he is getting by

I am him and he is 25

yeah those were the old days

there's some things in life time can't replace

he wants to go back to those days

but he doesn't look back because hes not going that way.
